A procedure in which a health care provider inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the anus to feel for abnormalities in the anus, anal canal, and lower part of the rectum. A digital anorectal exam (DARE) can help find abnormalities that may be caused by conditions such as anal precancer, anal cancer, or hemorrhoids. If an abnormality is found, further testing, such as a standard anoscopy or high-resolution anoscopy, may be recommended.
