National Institutes of Health (NIH)

NIH is one of the world's foremost medical research centres and the federal focal point for medical research in the United States. It is composed of 27 separate institutes and centres.

  • Office of AIDS Research (OAR)
    OAR coordinates the scientific, budgetary, legislative, and policy elements of the NIH AIDS research program.
  • National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
    NIAID supports basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious and immune-mediated illnesses, including HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. The institute also supports medical research studies on tuberculosis, malaria, autoimmune disorders, asthma, allergies, and illnesses from potential bioterrorism agents.
  • National Library of Medicine (NLM)
    NLM is the world's largest medical library and the creator of PubMed, MEDLINE, and MedlinePlus (available in Spanish and English). The library collects materials in all areas of biomedicine and health care. It makes its resources available around the world primarily through its electronic information services.

Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)

HRSA's mission is to improve and expand access to quality health care to all Americans. HRSA operates the HIV/AIDS Bureau.

Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

CDC promotes health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. CDC's major HIV/AIDS initiative is the National Center for STD, HIV, and TB Prevention.
