HIV/AIDS Glossary

A type of cancer that develops in the lining of the anal canal or in the skin surrounding the opening of the anal canal (anus). Most anal cancers are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that can be transmitted through sexual contact. People with weakened immune systems, including people with HIV, are more likely to develop anal cancer than people with healthy immune systems.
