HIV/AIDS Glossary

Combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) that does not include antiretroviral (ARV) drugs from the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) drug class. NRTIs may be excluded from an HIV treatment regimen to avoid certain side effects associated with this drug class or to prevent the development of drug resistance to NRTIs so that a person with HIV can use these drugs in future treatment regimens.
