A federally funded study that determined that the risk of perinatal transmission of HIV could be reduced by nearly 70 percent if the antiretroviral (ARV) drug zidovudine was given to a woman during pregnancy and labor and delivery and to the newborn. The Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group 076 (PACTG 076) study contributed greatly to preventing perinatal transmission of HIV.
