A federal agency that conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. The institute’s areas of study include HIV; other infectious diseases, such as influenza and tuberculosis (TB); and allergy, immunology, and transplantation. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is part of the National Institutes of Health.
