HIV/AIDS Glossary

Kidney disease associated with HIV. HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) usually begins with large amounts of protein in the urine (proteinuria) and progresses rapidly to total kidney failure. HIVAN is very uncommon in people whose HIV is effectively controlled by antiretroviral (ARV) drugs.
